We lost power after hurricane Ike, and due to the cost of running the generator, were very conservative about using the generator for almost two weeks. We were making coffee in the evening, then drinking it cold (yuck) in the morning.

Luckily UPS was running shortly after the storm and we were members of Amazon Prime with their faster shipping included in the membership. We bought and received this carafe during the first week without power.

It's great. Coffee was still very hot after 10-12 hours in the carafe, and it held enough for four typical coffee mugs. Have to be careful with it as it has the glass liner, but I'm very pleased with this purchase. Have tucked it away for the next power outage (would be nice if I didn't need it ever again), but for a good looking carafe that keeps the beverage HOT, this one is a great choice.

With a manual drip Filter Cone I can make 1 L of coffee directly into this carafe in three minutes or less. Coffee still is 150 degree F after being left overnight for over eight hours. The Screw top is a bit annoying but you get used to it after a while. Have had the unit for about a month without any issues.

I bought this carafe because I have loved every zojirushi product I've purchased. But this product has a real problem. The bottom is not sealed so water gets inside the carafe, where it is not supposed to be. We are very careful when we wash this (by hand) but no matter how careful we are, water gets in the bottom (where the black and silver meet at the bottom). Once water is in there, it dribbles out the bottom when we pour coffee out of it. I shake it and water comes out. The manual says in large bold type not to take it apart. I've never taken it apart but yet we still have this problem.

Also, I think I was a little surprised when it arrived to find it is glass insulated on the inside (this is probably my fault for not reading the description carefully). I have to be extra careful not to bang it into anything because I am afraid it will break. I'm just pointing this out for anyone looking for a non-glass insulated carafe.

On the plus side, it keeps the coffee hot.

  4. I like tea, but I don't like a massive cup of tea because it's either scalding hot or lukewarm when I'm halfway done with it, and if I want another cup I have to go make it. Hence my search for a carafe.

So, on with my search, I wanted a carafe under 30 dollars and well built that would last. I didn't want a massive one since it was just me using it. This carafe fit the bill, it holds a quart of liquid (4 cups; 32 ounces) which lasts me through the day. It stays fully hot for 6-8 hours and it's medium warm in the morning if I left it overnight.

There's no push buttons, no strainers, it's just a simple pitcher, the black plastic seems like it's a solid one piece with a glass center. I'm not sure what the stuff is to make it thermal around it to retain the heat, but it works, and a screw on top. It looks just like the picture. That's it. It's well built (from Japan), it's sturdy, I have a feeling if I take care of it this will last for many years.

Now, how to use it. First I was disappointed that you can't put dairy in it since I'm a chai lover. They tell you on the box 'do not use dairy in this'. I did, I had to try, it curdled and was gross, I tried non-dairy creamer, same result. They warned me so kudos to them. I wasn't upset, I like to experiment and had a good laugh. Only when I tried using dairy products did I have to use a bottle brush to get gunk off the inner glass, if you just make tea or coffee (sugar is fine in it, even spices from chai) you just rinse it out and wash the plastic off and you're good to go.

Here are their warnings on the box, which most of them you would think is just common sense. (I paraphrased)
Don't allow children to use, it's not intended for them
Don't overturn the pot, it may spill (I believe them on this, it seals in the heat but if that lid comes just a little loose and it tips...well...)
Don't drink directly from the pot. ('nuff said)
Don't hold by the lid when carrying. Always use the handle.
Don't remove the base, the glass liner may become damaged. (why you'd want to, I don't know, it all looks like one piece to me)
Don't fill with dairy products, baby food, fresh fruit juice, dry ice or carbonated beverages.

Third, and the reason I spent a few days trying to decide if I really wanted it. I wanted to see it with the cap off and what the cap looks like. It's just a screw on top made of the same material as the base. The section that goes down into the top of the carafe to block it from spilling and to retain the heat has two grooves in it (one for pouring and one for air so the pouring is easier). Closed firmly all you have to do is turn the lid half a turn, (I hold it out firmly so the lid stays still and it gives it a little more room for the liquid to pour) and gently pour your liquid into your cup. The liquid slides through the groove, it's not fast and a full container can sputter a bit, but holding the lid up just a little lets the liquid pour out more easily, and with a simple half turn back it's sealed shut. They even show you the pictures on the first flap when you open the box what's 'open' and 'closed'.

Oh, and don't fill it all the way up to the top, you have the 'neck' area where the lid fits in, I fill it up just to where the neck starts (which is 4 cups, I measured), all the way full and liquid will spit and drip out when it's closed.

For the price, I'm pretty darn sure it will not break if you care for it and treat it well. It's well made, but a little care goes a long way. I love this, I would recommend it to all tea and coffee lovers that want a cuppa now and then through the day but only want to make it once.

I purchased this carafe because to my taste coffee gets bitter quickly when the pot is left on the coffeemaker warming plate. For a little over $20 this carafe solved that problem. It keeps the coffee hot and flavorful for hours. The carafe only holds 34 ounces. That's not as much as you might think so before you buy I'd recommend pouring 34 ounces of water into your coffee pot so you know exactly how much coffee this carafe will hold. In other words, don't assume a certain number of ounces per cup. Measure!! You might be surprised. If you want to make a full pot of coffee to take to work this carafe isn't for you. If make coffee in the morning and drink a few cups and take the rest to work this will do the job nicely. Hope this helps.

The newer Zojirushi carafe has a fancy new lid and pour design. I feared that it might break. This older model is perfect, for it has a screw on lid that is virtually indestructable. It keeps beverages HOT for many hours. It's glass too, which means that your favorite tea won't get that steel taste from catalyzing in a stainless steel carafe (coffee fairs much better in those kinds of carafe). I am glad this seller still has a few of the older models. Maybe Zojirushi will bring it back.

This is a high quality product. It keeps coffee hot for 24 hours. I fill it with hot water and leave it for an hour or so before adding the coffee to make sure it stays hot. It is a good quality carafe since it is made in Japan, not China. I have tried several others and none of them kept the coffee hot for more than a couple of hours. Highly recommended.

This is one of the most inexpensive solutions to lukewarm or cold coffee. The simple twist-top doesn't hold residual liquid so there won't be any odors, and a #4 Melitta filter cone sits nicely on top of the carafe. It's glass so it will easily clean with a bottle brush. If you don't want any plastic in contact with your coffee, buy a ceramic cone filter holder. You will wonder why you ever bought $80-$100 (or more) coffeemakers. Comments on two other ratings: 1) Yes, it is shiny and lacks the black stripe. It looks nice. 2) Water can get in the bottom. It's built the way that many glass thermos bottles are built (the bottom screws on). Just don't immerse it when you wash it.

Bought this from amazon to keep hot water handy whenever I would need it. I fill it with boiling hot water at about 8 at night and even the next day after noon when I checked the water was still the way it was filled the previous night. What a great product. I also filled it with warm water, warm enough for me to pour a glass and drink it immediately. Same result. Over 12 hours later the water was just as warm. One night I had left the cover half open hoping that the boiling hot water will cool a little just the way I wanted it to. But nothing apparently happened and the hot water stayed hot until I checked the following day. Very happy with the purchase. I have not used this for coffee, so I can't comment on that.
This is my first Zojirushi brand purchase. I am very impressed. It's made in Japan which was also a plus as I know that products made in japan are hard to come by and are very high quality. I have no issues with the cap either as it is very well sealed all around so there's no condensation build up. Easy to clean and it looks great on the counter top. Highly recommend.
